Homeopathy
Overview and FAQ

by Mary Cetan

Homeopathy is a gentle system of healing. It is based on the theory that "like cures like". That is, if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance causes the body to stimulate a curative effect in itself.

When small doses of diluted substances which are prepared from natural sources are administered to the patient, the body produces a healing response. The practitioner prescribes a certain remedy based on the patient's individual profile and diagnosis. Homeopathy treats physical, mental and emotional disharmonies.

What is homeopathy's history?
The principles of homeopathy were developed over 200 years ago into a comprehensive system of natural medicine by the German physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Success with homeopathy spread quickly throughout Europe and the rest of the world, including the U.S and is used by millions of people. Clinical experience along with research published in such medical journals as The Lancet, Pediatrics, and the British Medical Journal have confirmed homeopathy's effectiveness. It is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

How does homeopathy differ from conventional medicine?
Homeopathy focuses on the patient, not the disease. It is based on the principle that "like cures like." For example, if a person has hay fever, with watery eyes and a burning nasal discharge, a Homeopathic physician might prescribe Allium cepa - a tiny dose of onion, specially prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy, in accordance with FDA approved guidelines. Because an onion is known to cause watery eyes and a burning nasal discharge in a healthy person, then it can stimulate a healing reaction in a person suffering from those same symptoms.

How does homeopathy view symptoms of disease? The symptoms are not the disease. Homeopathy regards symptoms as the body's healthy attempt to restore itself to balance. A Doctor of Oriental Medicine will choose a remedy that supports the symptoms to heal. A homeopath chooses a remedy that matches a person's unique symptom profile -- including physical, mental and emotional symptoms.

Are the homeopathic remedies toxic?
No, they are completely safe and non-toxic.

Who can benefit from homeopathy?
Every living being. Homeopathy can be used safely with infants, children, adults, and animals.

How do you take a homeopathic remedy? A homeopathic remedy should be taken 15 minutes away from food or drink. The pellets should not be touched , they can be placed in the cap of the bottle and poured under the tongue. The pellets can also be placed on a plastic spoon (not metal) before placing under tongue. They should not be swallowed, just let them dissolve under the tongue. Store your homeopathic remedy away from strong smells and electronic devices.
